What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?

Zi Wei Dou Shu, also known as Purple Star Astrology or Emperor Astrology, is one of the most respected forms of Chinese fortune-telling. Developed during the Tang Dynasty, it was originally used exclusively by the imperial court to guide emperors' decisions.

The name "Zi Wei Dou Shu" translates to "Purple Star Astrology," referring to the North Star (Zi Wei Star), which is the central star in this system. Unlike Bazi which uses Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, Zi Wei Dou Shu maps over 100 stars across twelve life palaces.

The Twelve Palaces

The Zi Wei chart is divided into twelve palaces, each representing a different aspect of life: Life Palace (personality, destiny), Siblings Palace (relationships with brothers/sisters), Spouse Palace (marriage, partnerships), Children Palace (offspring, fertility), Wealth Palace (finances, income), Health Palace (physical well-being), Travel Palace (travel, relocation), Friends Palace (social connections, subordinates), Career Palace (profession, ambitions), Property Palace (real estate, living environment), Fortune/Virtue Palace (spiritual life, karma), and Parents Palace (relationship with parents, ancestry).

Major Stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu

Zi Wei (Purple Star) is the Emperor star, representing leadership, authority, and nobility. Tian Ji (Heavenly Mechanic) governs intelligence and strategic thinking. Tai Yang (Sun) represents masculinity, career, and father figure. Wu Qu (Martial Arts) signifies wealth, action, and determination.

Tian Tong (Heavenly Harmony) represents contentment and enjoyment. Lian Zhen (Banner) governs emotions and relationships. Tian Fu (Treasury) symbolizes wealth and stability. Tai Yin (Moon) represents femininity, mother, and hidden wealth. Tan Lang (Greedy Wolf) governs desires and social skills.

Po Jun (Destructive Army) represents change and transformation. Qi Sha (Seven Killings) signifies courage and decisiveness. Each star's influence changes based on its palace placement and combinations with other stars.

How to Read a Zi Wei Chart

Begin by examining the Life Palace and its ruling star. This reveals your core personality and life path. Next, look at the Career Palace for professional guidance and the Wealth Palace for financial prospects.

Pay attention to star combinations. Some stars enhance each other (like Zi Wei and Tian Fu), while others create tension. The presence of "transformation stars" (Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, Hua Ji) adds another layer of meaning, indicating fortune, power, fame, or obstacles.

Zi Wei vs. Bazi: Which to Choose?

Both systems are valuable and complementary. Bazi is excellent for understanding your elemental nature, life cycles, and timing of events. Zi Wei Dou Shu provides more detailed insights into specific life areas through its twelve-palace system.

Many practitioners use both systems together for a more comprehensive reading. Bazi reveals the "what" and "when," while Zi Wei Dou Shu explains the "how" and "why" in greater detail.

Getting Your Zi Wei Chart

You can calculate a basic Zi Wei chart by hand using your birth date and time, but the palace placements and star rotations are intricate enough that most people use a tool. A generated chart shows the twelve palaces and the stars within each at a glance.
